Common Causes of Stretch Marks

Stretch marks are extremely common. In fact, a 2015 study in the Journal of American Academy of Dermatology found that more than half of all pregnant women will develop stretch marks on their abdomen, hips, thighs or breasts. Even for women who have not had children, stretch marks can develop anytime that there is rapid stretching of the skin; for example, during times of rapid growth or weight gain.

Stretch marks are caused when some of the skin’s connective tissue ruptures during periods of weight gain or growth, which decreases the amount of connective tissue in that area. This connective tissue can include collagen and elastin, which are important players in the skin’s suppleness and smoothness. While sometimes stretch marks can be prevented by thoroughly moisturizing the skin regularly, some women are simply more genetically at-risk of developing stretch marks than others.

Types of Stretch Marks

Stretch marks can appear anywhere on the body that has seen rapid growth. They are most commonly seen on the stomach, breasts, upper arms, thighs, and buttocks. When they first appear, stretch marks tend to be red, purple, pink, or brown. They can even be itchy or feel slightly raised. Over time, the color of the stretch marks will fade to white or silver and narrow bands will sink beneath the skin. In fact, a slight depression can often be felt over a mature stretch mark.

Treatments for Reducing Stretch Marks

Newer stretch marks that still have a red-tinged appearance are easier to treat than mature stretch marks. This is because newer stretch marks have active blood vessels present under the skin (hence the red-tinged appearance). These functioning blood vessels make the red stretch marks more responsive to treatment. Older stretch marks are still treatable, but the results may not be as drastic as those achieved when treating new stretch marks. This is why we encourage our patients to seek stretch mark treatment as soon as possible to ensure the most optimal results.

Body Contouring With SculpSure®

This non-invasive body contouring system reduces areas of stubborn fat including the abdomen, love handles and thighs. As an added benefit, it stimulates collagen production in the skin, increasing lift and firmness in the areas treated and helping to reduce stretch marks.

Many of these treatments can be used in customized combinations to help achieve your desired results as quickly as possible. This is due to the increased stimulation of collagen production which works to grow new skin cells, leaving you with smooth, even-toned skin.
